QUALCOMM

A Better Model for Competition

Before Qualcomm, consumers were offered few choices when it came to mobile phones.

Why? Because only the largest mobile phone manufacturers could afford to invest in technology development—smaller companies with new ideas did not have the big R&D budgets to get mobile phones to market.

Then Qualcomm introduced its business model:

Qualcomm develops new technology through investment in R&D and strategic acquisitions and fosters competition by broadly licensing the rights to use its patented technology. Further, Qualcomm provides its customers the opportunity to easily and quickly develop and introduce their products by providing chips and software that integrate Qualcomm’s technology. Additionally, Qualcomm has worked to reduce its customers’ intellectual property costs and minimize intellectual property disputes within the industry through the cross-licenses it has obtained from a very large number of significant patent holders.
